Nearly every ceramic coating sold to consumers claims 9H hardness. A few claim 10H. Some claim 9H+. The number is printed larger than anything else on the box, and it is doing a lot of work in the buying decision.
It comes from a real test with a real standard behind it. It just does not measure what most people think it measures, and once you know what it is, the marketing gets much easier to read.
Where the number comes from
9H is a pencil hardness rating, from a test standardized as ASTM D3363 and often called the Wolff-Wilborn test. It was developed for evaluating coatings and films generally, not specifically for automotive products.
The method is exactly what it sounds like. A set of drafting pencils of graded hardness, running from very soft to very hard, is sharpened flat and pushed across the cured coating at a fixed angle and a fixed load. You work up the scale until a pencil marks the surface. The hardness of the last pencil that does not leave a mark is the rating.
The scale runs from 6B at the soft end through HB in the middle up to 9H at the hard end. 9H is the top of that scale. There is nothing above it, which means a 10H claim is not a higher result on this test. It is a number somebody made up, because the test cannot produce it.
This is not the Mohs scale
The most common confusion worth clearing up: 9H is not a 9 on the Mohs mineral scale. Mohs 9 is corundum, the family that includes sapphire and ruby. A ceramic coating is not remotely in that territory, and any marketing that implies it is has either misunderstood the test or is counting on you to.
What it genuinely tells you, and what it does not
It does tell you something. Automotive clear coat typically tests somewhere in the range of 2H to 4H on the same scale, so a coating that reaches the top of the scale is meaningfully harder than the surface underneath it. That is not nothing.
What it cannot tell you is how the coating behaves in the real failure modes:
- A graphite pencil at a controlled load is not a wash mitt carrying a grain of sand. The pencil test measures resistance to a specific, clean, blunt marking action. Swirl marks come from hard, irregular particles dragged under pressure, which is a different mechanism entirely.
- It says nothing about durability. Chemical resistance, UV stability, and how the coating holds up over years of hot Sacramento summers are separate properties, tested separately, and never printed on the box.
- It says nothing about thickness. A cured coating is roughly one to three microns thick. Clear coat is typically 35 to 50 microns. A very thin hard layer over a much thicker soft one behaves mostly like the soft one when something presses into it.
- Every coating on the shelf claims the same number, so it cannot help you choose between two of them. When every product in a category reports the identical result, the metric has stopped being a differentiator.
A coating does not protect your paint by being hard. It protects your paint by making contamination release with less contact, which means every wash does less damage.
So a coating does not stop scratches?
It reduces some of them, honestly. Very light marring that would have gone into the clear coat can end up in the coating instead, and the coating is the sacrificial layer, which is the point. But nothing in this category stops a scratch you can feel with a fingernail, and no coating stops rock chips or a shopping cart. Anyone promising that is selling something else.
The larger benefit is indirect and it is the one worth buying. Coated paint releases dirt more easily, so washing it requires less pressure and less dwell time with a mitt on the surface. Most swirl marks are put into a car during washing. Reduce the contact and you reduce the damage, and that effect compounds over years.
What to ask instead
- What is the product by name, and who is the manufacturer? A named, established product with a professional installer network is a different purchase from an unbranded bottle.
- How many years is the durability rating, and what does the manufacturer require to keep it valid? Most real warranties require documented maintenance and periodic inspections. That is reasonable, and it is worth knowing before you sign.
- What correction is included before the coating goes on? This is the single biggest driver of both price and result, and the answer separates real quotes from cheap ones.
- Is the installer certified by that manufacturer? Certification means the warranty is backed by the manufacturer rather than by a promise from a shop that may not be there in four years.
None of those questions mention hardness, which is the point. We install certified coatings and we are happy to tell you exactly which product goes on your car and why. If someone quoting against us leads with 9H and cannot answer the four questions above, you have learned something useful about the quote.
