Run your hand along an older boat hull or the sidewall of a sun-parked RV and it comes away white. Most people assume that's dirt or dried soap. It isn't. It's your gelcoat — literally coming off on your fingers — and understanding why explains almost everything about how these surfaces should be treated.
Gelcoat is not clear coat
Automotive paint is layered: pigment underneath, a clear protective coat on top. Gelcoat is a pigmented polyester resin where the color and the surface are the same single layer. There is nothing sacrificial above the pigment. So when UV penetrates the surface and photodegrades the resin, the binder holding the pigment particles in place erodes away, and those pigment particles are left loose on the surface. That freed powder is the chalk. It scatters light instead of reflecting it, which is why oxidized gelcoat goes flat and hazy rather than simply dull.
The white on your hand isn't dirt. It's pigment that has nothing left holding it down.
The one advantage: there's material to work with
Automotive clear coat is on the order of one to two mils thick, which is why we measure before every correction. Gelcoat is typically laid on around fifteen to twenty mils — roughly ten times as much. That's genuinely good news, because it means heavy oxidation can be compounded away to expose fresh, unweathered gelcoat underneath. It's also why marine-grade compounds exist: automotive polishes generally don't have the cutting power to level oxidized polyester.
It is still finite. Each correction pass removes roughly a mil to a mil and a half, and gelcoat is thinnest exactly where people tend to bear down — edges, corners, molded features, chines, and raised lettering. Those are the burn-through zones, and burning through means fiberglass laminate, which is a repair, not a polish. Built-in UV stabilizers also deplete within a couple of years without wax, sealant, or coating on top, so protection after correction isn't an upsell. It's the thing that determines whether you're doing this again next season.
An RV is several different vehicles at once
That's the part that catches people out. A single RV combines gelcoat sidewalls, painted front caps, aluminum, vinyl decals, a rubber roof, and sealant beads — each wanting different chemistry. There is no one-product approach, and the most common expensive mistake is running an aggressive compound across graphics. Decals fade, chalk, crack, and lift under UV, and once cracked they can't be polished back. They get replaced.
Those black streaks down your sidewalls have a specific cause worth knowing. EPDM rubber roofs are designed to chalk — the membrane oxidizes sacrificially and sheds residue on purpose. Rain then carries that chalk plus accumulated dirt down over the sides, and it sticks. TPO roofs are stiffer and more UV-resistant and don't chalk the same way, which is why some rigs streak badly and others barely do. Regular roof washing limits how much dirt is up there to wash down; Dicor's guidance for EPDM is non-abrasive cleaners with a medium-to-stiff brush, and avoiding petroleum-based solvents entirely.
And while we're up there: seals and seams are where RVs actually die. Sealant degradation leads to water intrusion and delamination, which costs orders of magnitude more than any detail. We inspect them while we're working because it would be strange not to.
Before you tow it to Tahoe
If you're launching a motorized vessel at Lake Tahoe from any other waterbody, TRPA requires decontamination — and arriving Clean, Drained and Dry cuts the decontamination fee in half. Inspection stations run daily from 8:30am to 5:30pm at Meyers, Spooner Summit, and Alpine Meadows. The current driver is golden mussels, recently found in California waters within a few hours' drive of the lake. So a proper pre-trip clean isn't just cosmetic here; it has a direct cost and time consequence at the gate.
Worth knowing too: UV intensity rises roughly ten to twelve percent per thousand meters of elevation, and Tahoe sits above six thousand feet. Add the reflected load coming off the water onto your hull sides and topsides, and a summer at the lake is meaningfully harder on gelcoat than a summer in the Valley.
