Sacramento has a lot of EVs, and we detail them constantly. Most of the work is the same as any other car — but a handful of things genuinely change, and a few of the manufacturer's own instructions are strict enough that ignoring them can affect a warranty claim. Here's what actually matters.
Read the wash instructions. Really.
Tesla publishes specific washing guidance in the owner's manual, and it's more prescriptive than most owners expect. Keep a pressure washer nozzle at least twelve inches from the surface and keep it moving. Use cold or lukewarm water, never hot. Don't aim the jet at seals, electronic modules, exposed cabling, or parking sensors. Never spray high-velocity water toward the charge port while the car is charging — Tesla flags that one as a risk of serious injury or damage.
On chemistry, Tesla asks for mild non-detergent soap and warns against highly alkaline or caustic ingredients, specifically anything containing hydroxide. Worth noting for the pH purists: the manual's stated ceiling is pH 13, which is considerably more permissive than the neutral-only advice you'll read online. The danger is strong alkalinity repeated over time, not a soap that drifts a point off neutral.
And the one that surprises people: automatic washes should be touchless only, no brushes, and Tesla notes that failing to follow their guidance can void warranty coverage for the resulting damage. Most models include a Car Wash Mode that closes the windows, locks the charge port, and disables the wipers.
Is Tesla paint really softer?
Directionally yes, though the internet wildly overstates the specifics. The best evidence we can point at is an independent inspection by Finland's Central Chamber of Commerce on a Model 3 that had taken significant paint damage in under 1,400 miles. It measured average paint thickness of 106 microns against a 110–150 micron industry norm, with some door bottoms in the low 70s, and rated the finish soft on the standard pencil-hardness scale. That's one car and one inspection, not a fleet study — but it lines up with years of quality-survey data showing Tesla scoring well below the industry average on cosmetic complaints like paint imperfections and orange peel.
We'd skip the popular explanation that it's because Tesla uses water-based paint. Nearly every automaker uses waterborne basecoat — it's the industry norm for emissions compliance, not a Tesla quirk — and clear coat is generally still a solvent-based urethane. The better-supported story is process, not chemistry: waterborne paint needs longer flash and cure time, and the older Fremont paint shop was too cramped to give it. Reports on newer cars have improved.
The practical takeaway isn't that Tesla paint is bad. It's that it's less forgiving of a bad wash — which makes technique, film, and coating unusually worth it.
Less brake dust, dirtier rotors
Regenerative braking means the friction brakes do a fraction of the work, and the research on brake-wear particulate is striking — published studies put the reduction anywhere from roughly 65% to 95% depending on the drive cycle, even accounting for EVs being heavier. In practice, EV wheels are dramatically easier to clean than a German sedan's.
The counterintuitive part is what happens to the rotors. Pads that rarely engage stop scrubbing the rotor faces clean, so EV rotors surface-rust and collect grime instead of wearing bright. Wheels get easier; the brake hardware behind them needs more attention, not less. It also means coating EV wheels pays off well, because the small amount of dust that does land tends to sit undisturbed.
No engine bay, but not nothing
There's no oil, no coolant weep, and no hot degreasing job — the frunk is a plastic and carpeted storage tub that vacuums and wipes out in minutes. But under there you'll still find high-voltage components, orange cabling, and battery cooling loops. We treat that space as electronics: no pressure washing, no flooding, no aggressive degreaser. The upside for owners is straightforward — that line item is faster and cheaper on an EV than it is on a combustion car.
Cameras, sensors, and screens
Camera and sensor cleanliness isn't cosmetic on a modern EV — a filmed-over lens can disable driver-assistance features outright. Clean them with a damp microfiber and plain water; no abrasives, no solvents, no polishing compounds, and Tesla explicitly warns against chemical or abrasive cleaners on lenses and anything sharp near the ultrasonic sensors. We also don't apply coatings or waxes over lenses and sensor covers, since a film in front of an optic is a bad idea on principle.
Inside, the two things that get damaged most are the synthetic upholstery and the high-gloss black trim. Tesla specifies water and non-detergent soap for its seats, and warns against bleach, ammonia, alcohol, petroleum products, and — specifically — melamine “magic eraser” sponges, which abrade the protective topcoat and lead to cracking and discoloration. That matters most on white interiors, where denim dye transfer is the number one complaint. Piano-black trim has no clear coat hardness to speak of and shows every micro-scratch, so it gets dusted with a soft dry microfiber or detail brush before anything damp touches it. Never dry-wipe grit across it.
One practical note for mobile work
EVs are heavy — a Model Y runs roughly 700 pounds more than a comparable crossover — which means more tire and road grime thrown onto rocker panels and lower quarters, and doors that need care in tight driveways. It also means jack points matter enormously if a job requires lifting; the battery pack is never a lift point.
