People are surprised when a motorcycle quote lands near a car quote. The bike is a quarter of the size. The reasoning is easy once you count materials instead of square footage.

A modern sedan is mostly one surface: clear-coated paint, with some glass, some plastic trim, and four wheels. A motorcycle can put painted tank, raw aluminum, anodized aluminum, polished chrome, powder-coated frame, unpainted plastics, stainless and titanium exhaust, rubber, leather or vinyl, and exposed drivetrain within an arm's reach of each other. Every material change means a different product and a different tool, and none of it can be done with a machine polisher moving in long passes.

The pressure washer is the first thing to put down

On a car you can be careless with a pressure washer and get away with it. On a bike you cannot. Wheel bearings, steering head bearings, swingarm pivots, and the countershaft seal all sit behind seals that were designed to keep grease in, not to resist a pressurized jet aimed at them from six inches.

  • Never point pressure at bearings, seals, the chain, the instrument cluster, switchgear, or any connector.
  • Water in an exhaust is a real thing on a bike, particularly one with an upswept can. Cover it or keep the angle sensible.
  • Air intakes on a naked bike are often exposed and pointed forward. Know where yours is before you rinse the front of the bike.
  • Low pressure and a gentle flow do everything a jet does here, because the dirt on a bike is not stuck the way road film on a truck is.

Chain lube is a different cleaning problem

The fling pattern off a chain lands on the rear wheel, the swingarm, the shock linkage, and the underside of the tail. It is oil carrying road grit, it has usually been baked by exhaust heat, and it does not come off with car wash soap. It needs a dedicated degreaser, dwell time, and agitation with brushes that fit into spoke gaps and around a sprocket.

It also has to be done in the right order and finished properly. Degreaser removes chain lubricant, which means the chain has to be cleaned, dried, and relubricated as part of the service. A detailer who hands your bike back with a stripped, dry chain has created a maintenance problem while solving a cosmetic one.

Polishing a bike is hand work

There are very few flat panels on a motorcycle, and most of the painted surfaces you care about, the tank and the fairings, are curved, edged, and interrupted by badges, decals, and fasteners. Machine correction happens with small spot pads on the broadest areas only. Everything else is hand polishing, worked around edges where paint is thinnest and where a machine would burn through in a second.

Chrome and polished aluminum need their own metal polish and their own towels, and the order matters: metal polish residue dragged onto paint is abrasive. Anodized aluminum is not chrome and should never see a metal polish, because the finish is a surface layer that polish removes and does not restore.

What can be fixed and what cannot

  • Oxidized, cloudy chrome and light surface rust on plated parts usually comes back well with metal polish and patience.
  • Pitted chrome does not. Pitting means the plating has been breached and the steel underneath has corroded. Polishing makes the surrounding area shine and makes the pits more visible, not less.
  • Exhaust bluing on stainless headers is a heat-oxidation color layer. Some of it comes back with a dedicated bluing remover. Deep blue and purple from a hard-run bike is often permanent, and we will tell you which one you have before starting.
  • Faded, chalky unpainted plastics can be restored, but the honest options are a dressing that needs reapplying or a permanent trim restorer. Both work. Only one lasts, and it costs more.
  • Cracked or lifting decals under clear are a paint shop job. Nothing in a detail brings those back.

Coating a bike is a better value than coating a car

This surprises people, and the reason is behavioral. Bikes get washed far more often than cars, and they get wiped down between rides with whatever is on the bench. That frequency is exactly what puts fine scratches into a tank. A coating on the painted surfaces means the bug splatter and the road film release with a rinse instead of a scrub, which removes most of the contact that was doing the damage.

It also helps in places a car never deals with. Coated wheels shed chain fling and brake dust instead of holding it. Coated exhaust and engine cases release baked-on grime with far less agitation. And on a bike that spends time in the Sierra or on Delta levee roads, bug removal stops being a twenty-minute chore after every ride.

Most of the swirls on a motorcycle tank were not put there by the road. They were put there by the owner, wiping dust off with a dry rag between rides.

Before your bike gets detailed

Tell whoever is working on it about anything aftermarket, anything wrapped, any paint that has been redone, and anything currently leaking. Point out the switchgear and any exposed electrical you know about. If the bike has a battery tender lead, a GPS mount, or a camera, mention it. And expect to be asked when the chain was last lubricated, because that answer changes the order of operations.
