On a sedan, the interior and exterior of a detail take about the same time. On a three-row SUV or a minivan, the interior usually takes longer, often much longer. Seven or eight seats, a cargo area, sliding doors, and years of snacks add up.
Knowing where the time goes helps you understand the quote, and it shows you where a little upkeep saves the most work.
Car seats and what is under them
Child car seats are where the worst of the mess hides. Crumbs, spilled milk, and sticky residue collect underneath the base and in the seat crease behind it, out of sight and out of reach of a quick vacuum. Seats that hold a car seat for years also get pressed dents in the cushion.
We clean around car seats, and under them if they come out first. It is best to remove them yourself before the appointment and reinstall them after, since correct installation is something a parent should check by the car seat manual.
The third row and the seat tracks
Third-row seats fold, slide, and stow, and every one of those mechanisms is a crumb trap. The tracks the second-row seats slide on collect debris that only comes out with the seats moved all the way forward and back. Stow-away seats in minivans have wells in the floor that fill with whatever falls in.
Sliding doors and extra glass
Minivan sliding doors have tracks at the top, bottom, and middle. Grit in the bottom track wears the rollers and makes the door noisy. Cleaning the tracks is part of a good detail. SUVs and minivans also have much more glass than a sedan, including small quarter windows that are easy to miss and big rear glass that gets fingerprints from the inside.
Cargo area and rear vents
The cargo area behind the third row gets sports gear, groceries, dogs, and spills. Many have a hidden storage bin under the floor that collects sand and wet things. Rear climate vents and controls in the ceiling collect dust and sticky handprints. All of it is extra surface that does not exist in a sedan.
Most of the time in a family car detail goes to places nobody looks: under the car seat, in the seat tracks, and in the door channels.
Before we arrive
- Take out car seats and boosters if you want the seats under them cleaned.
- Clear out loose toys, gear, and anything in the cargo bin you do not want handled.
- Leave the stow-away seat wells and under-floor bins accessible.
- Point out any specific stains or smells, especially milk or vomit, which need their own treatment.
Keeping it clean between details
- All-weather floor liners in every row, including the third.
- A seat protector under each car seat, one that does not interfere with installation according to the car seat manual.
- A small trash bag hung on a seat back, emptied weekly.
- Kick guards on the backs of the front seats if little feet live behind them.
- A fabric coating on cloth seats, which makes spills bead up long enough to blot.
For a family car, a full interior detail a couple of times a year with quick tidy-ups between is usually enough. If you want a number, send photos of each row and the cargo area. We will quote the whole vehicle, not just the front seats.
