A detailer machine polishing the door of a white car

We get asked this a lot, usually by people who have seen coating shops with bright booths and spotless floors and wonder how that translates to a driveway. The honest answer is that a coating can be installed well at your home, but it needs a few things to go right, and a good installer will tell you if your setup is missing one.

Most of the job is not the coating

Applying a coating takes a few hours. The prep before it takes most of the time. The car gets washed, then chemically decontaminated to remove iron and tar, then clayed to pull out bonded contamination. Then the paint gets polished, because a coating locks in whatever is underneath it, swirls and all. Then every panel is wiped down to remove polishing oils so the coating can bond to bare clear coat.

On a car with healthy paint, that can be a long day. On a car that needs real correction first, it is more than one. Any quote that does not explain the prep is quoting the easy part.

What the space needs

  • Shade or cover. Coatings are applied out of direct sun. Hot panels make the coating flash too fast to level properly, and that leaves high spots.
  • Room to walk all the way around the car, with doors open. Door jambs and lower panels take as long as anything else.
  • Protection from wind. Dust, pollen, and leaves landing on wet coating get locked in.
  • A dry place for the first night. Fresh coating should stay dry while it sets up, so dew, sprinklers, and rain matter.

A garage covers all four. A carport or a shaded driveway with a pop-up canopy can cover most of them on the right day. A street spot under a tree is the hard case, both for the dust during the install and the sap and droppings that follow.

What the weather needs

Each coating brand publishes its own application range, and most give a minimum temperature. Gtechniq, for example, says to apply its GT1 coating out of direct sun with the car fully dry and the air above 40°F. Heat and humidity also change how fast a coating flashes, which is the moment it is ready to be wiped level. Too hot and it flashes before you can work it. Too cold or damp and it takes far longer to set up.

In the Valley, that rules out the middle of a summer afternoon in open sun, and foggy winter mornings when everything is wet with dew. Spring and fall give the widest window. Summer installs happen early in the day or under cover.

A coating does not care where it is installed. It cares about clean paint, shade, steady temperature, and staying dry overnight.

Lighting matters more than people think

High spots, the uneven patches where coating was not leveled fully, are hard to see in flat light and easy to see later in direct sun. Removing them is simple while the coating is fresh and much harder after it cures. So we inspect every panel under handheld lights during the install, not just at the end, and why we work panel by panel instead of coating the whole car and then wiping it all down.

When we would rather wait

Some days are wrong for a coating, and the right call is to move it. Rain forecast for that night with no covered spot. Strong wind. A heat wave with no shade. A car that turns out to need two days of correction when only one was planned. A rescheduled install is a minor annoyance. A coating with dust or high spots locked in is a problem you live with for years.

Questions to ask any mobile installer

  • How much paint correction is included, and how will you decide if the car needs more?
  • What do you need from my space: cover, shade, power, water?
  • What happens if the weather turns on the day?
  • How do you check for high spots before you leave?
  • What are the cure instructions for the first week?

If the answers are vague, so is the result. Send us photos of your car and where it parks. We can say from those whether the spot works as it is, or what we would need to bring.
