NobodyAgreesWhataFullDetailIs.OneQuestionSettlesAnyQuote.

Foam wash during a full exterior detail

Two quotes for a full detail on the same car. One is a couple of hundred dollars. The other is three times that. Neither shop is being dishonest — they've quoted two genuinely different jobs using an identical phrase, because the phrase has no agreed definition anywhere in this industry.

There's one question that resolves it every time. It's near the bottom. First, what the tiers actually contain, because the vocabulary is most of the confusion.

Maintenance wash

A safe hand wash and dry, wheels and tires, glass, and a vacuum and wipe inside. This maintains a car that's already in good condition and already protected. It doesn't restore anything, and it isn't supposed to. If your car is sealed or coated, this is what you should be buying most of the time — and if a shop tells you that instead of upselling, that's a good sign about the shop.

Full detail, inside and out

Everything above, plus depth. On the outside that means chemical decontamination, usually including an iron remover, then mechanical decontamination with clay or a synthetic equivalent, then a protective layer — a wax or a sealant. On the inside it means seats, carpets, headliner, vents, crevices, and door jambs treated as individual surfaces rather than wiped as one. It takes several hours, and on a neglected car it takes most of a day.

What it does not include, at most shops: paint correction. That single omission is where the entire price ambiguity lives.

Paint correction

Machine polishing to remove defects from the clear coat — swirl marks, light scratches, water-spot etching, oxidation. It's described in stages: a single stage is one combined cut-and-polish pass; multi-stage means compounding, then polishing, then refining. It's priced by the hour of skilled labor rather than by the vehicle, and it's expensive because it's slow and because it spends clear coat that cannot be put back.

Coating

Applied after correction, because a coating locks in whatever is underneath it. A coating over swirled paint gives you very durable swirls. This isn't a cleaning service at all — it's a protection service that has a correction prerequisite, which is why coating quotes look high until you separate the two halves.

A detail cleans what's there. Correction changes what's there. If a quote doesn't tell you which one you're buying, you don't have a quote yet.

So, the question

Ask this: does this include machine paint correction, and if so, how many stages? That one question explains most of the gap between any two quotes you will ever receive. The lower number is almost always a thorough clean plus a protective layer. The higher one usually contains correction hours. Both can be entirely fair prices for what they are.

A useful follow-up: what protection goes on at the end, and how long should I expect it to last? A detail that finishes with bare paint looks spectacular for about two weeks, and in a Valley summer that's roughly how long it stays that way.

How often you actually need one

The honest answer is that it depends almost entirely on where the car sleeps. That's not the tidy answer people want, but it's the one that saves money.

  • Garaged, moderate mileage, protection maintained — a full detail once or twice a year, with maintenance washes between.
  • Parked outside and uncovered through a Valley summer — twice a year at minimum, and the protection interval matters more than the cleaning interval. Bare paint gets no grace period in this climate.
  • Under trees, beside irrigation, or on a jobsite — the calendar isn't setting your schedule, contamination is. Sap, droppings, and sprinkler minerals are time-sensitive damage rather than dirt, and they need dealing with in days.
  • Coated vehicles — correction shouldn't be on the schedule at all. Avoiding it is the entire point of the coating. Wash it properly and it holds.
  • Kids, pets, or food in the car — the interior runs on its own schedule and needs attention more often than the paint does.

One flag worth watching: correction should get rarer over a car's life, not more frequent. If you're being sold correction every year, either the wash process in between is cutting the paint back up, or you're being sold correction every year.

Where mobile changes the math

Mobile detailing removes the drop-off problem, which for most people is the actual reason a car goes three years between details — not cost, logistics. We bring water, power, and lighting to your driveway or your office lot, and the car isn't gone for a day.

The honest limits: heavy multi-stage correction benefits from controlled lighting and a controlled surface, and some jobs really are better done with the vehicle sitting in one place for a full day. When that's the case for your car, we'll say so rather than delivering a compromised version of it in a windy parking lot.

The line most people are on the wrong side of

Most cars we're called out to don't need more detailing. They need protection and a safer wash process, so that the detail already paid for actually lasts.

Someone who buys one full detail with a real sealant and then washes correctly for a year ends up with better paint than someone who buys four details and runs the car through a brush tunnel in between. The second person spends considerably more money to get a worse result, and nothing about the individual purchases looks unreasonable along the way.

If you're holding two quotes and can't work out why they're different, send them over. We'll tell you what each one is describing — including the times the answer is that the other quote is the better deal for what your car actually needs.
