Rain beading on a car's side window, seen from inside the cabin

When someone calls us about mold in a car, the first thing we want to know is how the water got in. That sounds like a detour. It is the most important part of the job. Clean mold out of a car with a leak and it grows back in a few weeks, usually right where it was.

Why cars grow mold

Mold needs moisture, something to eat, and time. A car has plenty of food: dust, skin flakes, crumbs, and the fibers in carpet and seats. Time is easy too, since a parked car is closed up and dark. The only missing piece is moisture, and when it shows up and stays, mold follows.

The EPA's guidance for homes says that in most cases mold will not grow if wet items are dried within 24 to 48 hours. A car with a wet carpet that sits closed up for a week in mild weather is past that window long before anyone notices a smell.

Where the water usually comes from

  • A window or sunroof left open in the rain. The simplest case, and the easiest to fix.
  • Blocked sunroof drains. Sunroofs are not watertight; they have a tray with drain tubes running down the pillars. When the tubes clog, water spills into the headliner and down onto the floor.
  • A clogged air conditioning drain. The AC pulls water out of the air and drains it under the car. If the drain blocks, water backs up and can soak the passenger side carpet.
  • Door and trunk seals that are torn, flattened, or pulled loose.
  • A clogged cowl drain under the base of the windshield, where leaves collect.
  • Flood water, which is a different and more serious category.

A wet passenger floor with no obvious cause is so often the AC drain that it is one of the first things we check. A wet spot in the back footwell often points to a door seal or a sunroof drain. Where the moisture is tells you a lot about where it came from.

Why wiping it off does not work

Car carpet sits on a thick foam or fiber pad, and that pad holds water like a sponge. The carpet surface can feel dry while the pad underneath is still wet, and that is where the mold is growing. Cleaning the top of the carpet treats the part you can see and leaves the source in place.

The same goes for seats. Seat foam soaks up water and dries very slowly. If mold is coming through the seat fabric, there is almost always mold in the foam behind it.

If the source is still wet, the mold is still growing. Everything else is cosmetic.

What a real remediation involves

  • Find and fix the leak. Clear the drains, replace or reseat the seal, or send it to a body or glass shop if the leak is structural.
  • Check how deep it goes. Lift carpet edges and trim panels to see whether the pad and foam are wet or stained.
  • Dry everything properly. Wet vacuuming, air movers, and time. Sometimes carpet has to be pulled up to dry the pad and the floor underneath.
  • Clean the affected surfaces with products suited to each material, using hot water extraction on carpet and upholstery.
  • Treat the air system if the smell comes through the vents, and replace the cabin air filter.
  • Replace what cannot be saved. The EPA notes that porous materials like carpet may have to be thrown away once moldy, because mold fills the spaces in the material.

Things to avoid

Bleach on car upholstery is a bad idea. It discolors fabric and leather, and it does not reach mold in the padding. Air fresheners and odor bombs cover the smell without touching the cause. Ozone machines get used on mold odors, but they are a finishing step at best, they have to be used with the car empty and aired out afterward, and they do nothing about the moisture or the growth itself.

When it is more than a detail

A car that sat in flood water is a different case. Flood water carries contamination, and it reaches wiring, modules, and insulation that no interior detail can get to. That is an insurance and repair conversation first. Severe mold covering most of the interior can also tip into that territory.

For everything short of that, the job is very doable. If anyone with asthma, allergies, or a weak immune system uses the car, keep them out of it until it is done.

If you are seeing spots or smelling must, send us photos of where it is and tell us if you know how the water got in. We will tell you whether it looks like a surface job or one where the carpet needs to come up.
